A taste of fame, Maynard renovations and delicious discounts at The George this January
Happy New Year from myself and the whole team at both The Maynard and The George Hathersage.
December was absolutely brilliant and our team worked hard to deliver our festive flair in all our food, drink, service and events.
From our Christmas markets in November through to our Gumpah Band and party nights all the way to our 7-course New Year’s Eve extravaganza, it was the perfect way to end a phenomenal year.
Our Story in the Derby Telegraph
The success of 2022 is so meaningful to us all at The Maynard and The George. I took on the lease of The Maynard on January 1st, 2020 with zero clue what was about to happen within a few short weeks. I sold my home to open the Maynard and faced bankruptcy in lockdown. Seeing the place so busy over Christmas moved me. Our success story was featured in a recent article in the Derby Telegraph. You can read it here.
We need a bigger trophy cabinet!
The last quarter of 2022 was also a time of incredible announcements on the awards front.
Firstly, we were crowned regional winners of Best Wedding Venue for East Midlands at The Wedding Industry Awards. We will attend the national final in London this month.
Then The George Hathersage was announced as the winner of the westside and Southside awards for Best Pub.
At the end of the year, we got the official email to say we were finalists in seven categories at the prestigious Peak District & Derbyshire Tourism awards;
The George
- New Tourism Business
- Pub of the Year
- Tourism Young Achiever – Josh Butler
The Maynard
- Taste of the Peak District & Derbyshire
- Hotel of the Year
- Unsung Hero – Soraya Ferrer
- Team of the Year
Interestingly, we are up for Team of the Year against my mum, dad, and sister in the family business, Hattersley Wines. I’m not sure if I’m willing the other finalists, Cressweg Crags Learning Team, to win this one to save the family drama!
We find out the results at the final in March 2023.
The Maynard May Be Closed (For Renovations) But The George is Open For Discounted Dining this January
The Maynard will close from January 9th to February 3rd for renovations.
Our restaurant is getting a full makeover along with hotel bathroom updates and big plans for luxurious outdoor spaces. I’ve written a blog about it here.
Dining Discounts at The George
The George Hathersage will, of course, remain open for two-for-one pizzas, pie and drink deals and cut price beers and wines. Plus lots more!

The George Closed Monday 9th January Only
The George will close next Monday, January 9th, to reward our fantastic staff for their tremendous achievements over Christmas.
Usually, workplaces have their Christmas parties in December but as our team work their socks off over the festive period, we have our staff party in January.
Wishing you and yours the most amazing 2023.
We hope to see you at The George this January and back in the Maynard in February, in the ambient and countrified comfort of our new, stylish renovated restaurant.
