No Car? No Problem. Here’s How to Reach The Maynard by Train and Bus
There’s a myth we’d love to bust: that you need a car to enjoy a proper Peak District escape.
Some of the best days out here start with a train ticket, rather than a tank of petrol. The Maynard is easy to reach by train or bus, without ever touching a steering wheel.
If you’ve been putting off a visit because you don’t drive, or you fancied leaving the car at home for once, this one’s for you.
Trains straight to our doorstep
Grindleford Station sits on the Hope Valley Line, running between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield, and it’s just a short stroll from our front door. Off-peak services run roughly once an hour in each direction, so there’s rarely a long wait.
From Sheffield, the journey takes around 15 minutes. From Manchester Piccadilly, it’s about an hour, with beautiful Peak District scenery for most of the ride. Northern Trains operates the route, and platform to pillow is a matter of minutes once you step off.
Buses that bring the Peaks to you
If a bus suits your journey better, the number 65 runs between Meadowhall and Tideswell, calling at Grindleford along the way and connecting easily with Sheffield for anyone travelling in from the city.
Between late May and mid-October, the Peak Sightseer open-top bus also stops nearby. It’s a hop-on hop-off service covering some of the best-loved spots in the Peaks, including a stop close to Grindleford (just a short walk up the hill from the village centre). It’s a lovely way to combine sightseeing with your journey to us, particularly if you’re making a full day of it.
Why it’s worth the trip
Arriving car-free means one thing, no need to worry about a lift home. Whether that’s an extra glass of wine with dinner or a slower, more relaxed pace to the day, taking public transport to The Maynard genuinely changes how you experience it.
And once you’re here, being car-free is no hardship. Grindleford puts you right on the doorstep of Padley Gorge, the Longshaw Estate and some of the finest gritstone edges in the country, all reachable on foot from the station.
So, why visit The Maynard?
Set in the heart of the Peak District, The Maynard is the kind of place people come back to again and again. Our gardens look out over the Derwent Valley, giving you views that make you forget you’re only an hour from Manchester or Sheffield.
Inside, our kitchen team focuses on seasonal, honest cooking, the sort of food that pairs perfectly with a walk in the hills beforehand and a drink by the fire afterwards. It’s a firm favourite with regulars and first-timers alike, whether you’re popping in for lunch after the train or booking ahead for a proper evening out.
If you’re staying over, our contemporary bedrooms offer a comfortable base for exploring the area, ideal for a weekend that starts and ends without needing the car at all.
